Agartala, Aug 15 (PTI) Independence Day was celebrated today in Tripura amidst tight security in view of the boycott call given by insurgent outfits to observe it as ‘black day’. After hoisting the national flag at the Assam Rifles ground here, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar appealed to the insurgents to lay down arms and join the mainstream by participating in development works. “Peace is the first precondition for development. We have to maintain peace in the state at any cost to continue the process of development,” Sarkar said. Official sources said security measures were tightened across the state in view of the Independence Day boycott call given by the outlawed insurgent outfits like All Tripura Tiger force and National Liberation Front of Tripura. Police and paramilitary personnel were patrolling at vulnerable points and random checking was on at various places to detect movement of the ultras. BSF had sealed the 856 KM long border with Bangladesh so that the ultras could not sneak into Indian territory from the neighbouring country. Independence Day was also celebrated at all the district headquarters. PTI JOY NN
